In a room of our small outbuilding where we keep our chicken feed, there was evidence of a nest built in an open cupboard along with bird droppings concentrated to a few places. So, one evening I set up my wildlife camera (set to 6-second time-lapse mode) to see what is happening and what birds are involved:
Although most of the time there was not much to see (possibly due to the long time interval) I did catch a couple of shots during daylight; the first (shown above) shows a robin about to enter the cupboard. The nest is in the far corner but it is in too much shadow to see it.
This shot shows the bird on top of the cupboard:
In these views you can just make out some straw forming part of the nest. The real surprise was when the camera switched to night vision mode and turned on its infra-red lamp:
Here you can see the robin ready to enter the cupboard but what shows well is its mate sitting on its nest ready to greet it. When we previously looked at the nest to see if it was occupied there was no sight of the bird – it must of crouched well down to avoid being seen. This next shot shows the two birds together:
I am in the process of creating a short movie of the robin sitting on its nest during the early evening and early morning when the camera was operating in night-time mode – watch this space!
I have also set the camera up in a different position tonight.
